Pop-Up Stores Taking Off in Down Market
Just in time for the holidays, pop-up stores are popping up all over.
Pop-up stores have been a factor from Thanksgiving to the end of the year for a decade or two, but the range of businesses, including year-round retailers, that are utilizing temporary concepts is new this year.
Renters of pop-up spaces are often merchants whose service and small retail businesses are easy to dismantle. In fact, some of them even have clauses in their contracts that force them to move out within 24 hours if their landlord finds a full-time tenant. But in this uneasy retail market such agreements aren’t so onerous for many merchants.
Christina Norsig, who founded PopUpInsider.com to match up tenants and landlords, says, "This is the next natural form of retailing. It really has exploded."
