Mortgage Paperwork-Sharing Bill Vetoed
President Obama on Thursday vetoed a bill that would have legalized electronic notarization across state lines. He opposed the legislature because state officials and consumer advocates said that it would make it more difficult for consumers to challenge foreclosure documents.
North Carolina consumer attorney O. Max Gardner said the bill would have allowed banks and mortgage companies to mass-produce documents and affix a notary seal to each of them rather than requiring each one to be notarized individually.
White House press secretary Robert Gibbs said Obama intended to work with lawmakers to create a bill that didn’t have “unintended consequences on consumer protections.”
