More Extended Families Sharing a Home
From 2005 to 2009, more than 3.8 million people moved in with the relatives.
Extended families now make up 8.2 percent of family households, up from 6.9 percent in 2005, according to data from the U.S. Census Bureau.
"We're seeing a shift away from the 1950s and 1960s mentality against extended families," says Stephanie Coontz, co-chair of the Council on Contemporary Families, a non-profit research association. "The '50s and '60s were a low point for extended families in America.”
