The Humane Society of the United State offers advice for taking care of your pets in the summer heat >>>

Advice from this dog owner:

  • Don't leave them in the car!
  • I don't leave my dogs in conditions I couldn't stand to be in all day.
  • Especially in summer, don't forget flea and tick medicine, as well as heartworm prevention. Don't get behind on rabies shots.
  • Make sure they have access to water at all times. If they live outside during the day, their water should be in the shade to keep it from getting hot.
  • I take my dogs running after the sun goes down. If you're a morning person, early morning is even better.
  • Don't have a dog to enjoy the summer with? There are plenty of animals that need homes at the Pitt County Animal Shelter. Or search on Petfinder.com for other animals in the area!
